40 Gbyte HDDs withstand 200g jolts 01/03/2007

Fifth generation hard disc drives (HDDs) from Toshiba Europe can withstand 200g of operational shock and 800g of non-operational shock.

The new 40Gbyte devices also support temperatures from –16ºC to +70ºC (MK4036GACE) and –30ºC to +85ºC (MK4036GAC).
Both are intended to support vehicle OEMs, Tier Ones and aftermarket suppliers in designing robust digital devices for the car including 3D GPS mapping, MP3 playback, digital video and gaming. The drives have sufficient storage capacity for approximately 7,500 songs or up to 130 hours of full-length movies.

Analyst IDC predicts that the market for HDDs will grow from 2.4 million units in 2005 to 8.5 million in 2009, as automotive manufacturers, car dealers and aftermarket suppliers continuously introduce new digital devices that enhance the driver and passenger experience.
