Basecoats now include primer functions 01/04/2007

BASF Coatings claims a world first for its latest technology which involves specially formulated OEM basecoats that combine all the functions of the primer, such as stone chip protection and ultraviolet protection.

Integrated Process II is said to meet the high standards for automotive finishes with regard to appearance and functionality. However, the coating process is shortened thanks to the elimination of the primer application section of the paint line and the primer oven.

The new system has been operating trouble-free on the BMW group’s MINI production line at Oxford in the United Kingdom.

BASF Coatings has been working on integrated processes for over 10 years. “With Integrated Process II, automotive paint lines can be streamlined, costs cut and the overall process simplified, even at existing paint lines,” said project manager Dr Wolfgang Duschek.

BASF Coatings and the BMW engineers worked together closely to realise the project at the MINI plant.

• BASF’s engineering plastics’ business helped MAHLE Filtersysteme in Öhringen, Germany, to realise the futuristic engine cover with an integrated air filter pictured here.

MAHLE produces this large part for DaimlerChrysler’s V8 engines using BASF’s Ultramid B3WG6 GP, a polyamide 6 material reinforced with 30% glass fibres. This material combines a particularly high resistance to bursting pressure with excellent dimensional stability.
