TRL to monitor active safety developments

TRL has been awarded the Technology Watch project by the Department for Transport. The aim of this two year project is to provide the Department with structured, up to date information on vehicle-based active safety systems that have an intelligent response to assist the driver in avoiding an accident or mitigating its consequences.
The project will create a web-based database to provide information on new and current active system technologies. Complemented by interpretation and analysis from vehicle safety experts, this database will also include information on casualty benefits, costs and risks, as well as up to date research, conferences, standards and industry information.
The intention is to provide a valuable resource on which to direct and inform future research and policy decisions relating to vehicle safety technologies and, if necessary, identify how best to coordinate the introduction of new technologies in the UK.
The Laboratory is well known for its contribution to the development of international standards and legislation and conducts research into the response of structures to dynamic impact, roadside restraint systems, human injury tolerance and modelling, crash test dummy development and evaluation of safety systems.
