Mobile phone technology goes into car safety 03/03/2009
 
Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has just signed a licensing agreement for the ARM Cortex R4F processor for use in automotive applications that include safety and chassis.

The Advanced RISC Machine technology that started out in Acorn computers and is now the basis of the vast majority of the world’s mobile phones offers particular advantages in automotive safety applications stemming from the inherent nature of RISC – Reduced Instruction Set Computing.

The processor features pre-integrated embedded error correction and a synthesis option to implement lock step architectures simplifying implementation and aiding IEC61508 and ISO26262 and ISO26262 certification. And it features memory protection facilities to enable tight control over independent software tasks. These functions are all critical to automotive applications based on the AutoSAR runtime environment and the JasPar Automotive software platform architecture,
Likely applications include developments such as: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning systems and systems monitoring driver fatigue and inattention.
In addition to the Cortex-R4F processor, the agreement includes the “AMBA” Designer tool and “CoreSight” technology for advanced on-chip debug and real-time trace
